SPECIAL TOPICS COURSE FOR FALL 2013
ENGCW 379W 00P
THE ART OF MEMOIR: WHEN WRITING FROM LIFE BECOMES REAL

Instructor: Lynna Williams
2:30-5:30 p.m. on Tuesdays

This is a permission-only class. Please come to the Creative Writing Program office in N209 Callaway to fill out an application form. No writing sample required. No pre-requisite.

Course Description
Memoir derives its energy, its narrative drive, from an exploration of the past. In this workshop, students will mine their own pasts, shaping their personal experiences into compelling essays that explore what it is take something as particular as childhood and family and shape it into something that speaks to a larger human experience. The question of what material to use in what genre—what makes something good material for an essay as opposed to fiction?—will be explored, as well as the uses of fictional techniques—scene, dialogue and characterization among them—in nonfiction. Students will write and revise about 60 pages of memoir, and read some exciting examples of the genre, but the primary focus of the class will be student work.

he has the flu. Emory anticipates being able to reschedule the lectures at a later time, to be announced.

People interested in attending the Ellmann Lectures will have to re-register for complimentary tickets
when the new dates are announced. Owing to scheduling uncertainties at this time, existing tickets

USA TODAY names Emory the number one school for "budding writers"!

1. Emory University (Atlanta, Georgia): Ask anyone for the best schools for writers, and Emory will inevitably emerge. With a plethora of outstanding minds flocking to and from Emory every year (be it guest lecturers, students, or alumni), it is no wonder why Emory would be a prime place for a budding writer. Emory offers extraordinary flexibility to its students; the only required course of all English majors is Poetry. E Students looking for more personal settings with professors will be happy to find that most English classes cap at 15 students, while the largest cap at 25.
