Information for Freshmen -- Fall 2021

Are you an incoming freshman interested in taking a Creative Writing workshop in Fall 2021?

All introductory Creative Writing courses are permission-only and freshmen must fill out and submit a freshman application form (see below for information on obtaining an application).

Please note the following:

  • The Creative Writing Program Fall 2021 course atlas is available HERE. The course atlas contains course descriptions, textbook lists, and assessments (grading rubric).

All these workshops are permission-only classes and you must fill out a freshman application form. A writing sample is not required.

To obtain an application form, e-mail Nora Lewis in the Creative Writing Program office at nora.lewis@emory.edu.

Five spaces are reserved in each workshop for freshmen. Creative Writing workshops are small -- 15 students total -- and classes fill up quickly, so the earlier you apply, the better. You may apply now; you do not have to wait until the summer or arrival on campus. We do maintain a waiting list if a class is full. If a space becomes available and you're next on the list, we will contact you to see if you still want the class.

We will offer ENGCW 271W Introduction to Poetry Writing and ENGCW 272W Introduction to Fiction Writing again in Spring 2021. You will have to fill out another application form during pre-registration in the fall. Application forms do not roll over from one semester to the next.

If you need advice about which course to take, please consult the program administrator, Nora Lewis, via e-mail at nora.lewis@emory.edu.

Nora Lewis will e-mail you to let you know if you have been accepted into a class. The e-mail will include a six-digit permission number. Emory's student registration system, OPUS, requires this number so it knows that you have permission for the class.

We accept applications even after freshman registration, up to the end of add-drop. If a space is still available in the class you want and you are accepted for the class, you can always add during add-drop, once the freshman registration periods have closed.

This is actually an easy process!  Just contact Nora Lewis at nora.lewis@emory.edu for a freshman application and she will also answer all your questions. If you have an issue that needs to be resolved by a faculty member or the College of Arts and Sciences, she will also help you with that.
