About the Program | Faculty | Students | Reading Series | Calendar | Writers' Resources Freshman Course Application | Course Atlas | Contests Are you a freshman interested in taking a Creative Writing course? Here's what you need to know. 1. As of 2:30 p.m. Wednesday morning (August 26), all introductory classes (ENG 270, ENG 271 and ENG 272) have been filled. 2. OPUS does not always accurately reflect a Creative Writing workshop's availability, as students who may have already received permission have not yet enrolled (thus the class looks open), or a student who intends to drop may not yet have done so (thus the class looks closed). The best way to find out what's available is to e-mail Paula Vitaris, the Creative Writing Program coordinator, or to call her at 404-727-4683. 3. All Creative Writing courses are permission-only. 4. This means you have to fill out an application, which must be submitted to Paula Vitaris in the Creative Writing Program office in N209 Callaway Center. Blank applications are available online at http://www.creativewriting.emory.edu/students/freshmancourseapp.html or at the Program office. 5. Freshmen should apply only for 200-level introductory courses (ENG 270, Introduction to Creative Writing; ENG 271 Introduction to Poetry; ENG 272 Introduction to Fiction). 6. You can read the descriptions for each course at our Course Atlas page, http://www.creativewriting.emory.edu/ atlas/index.html 7. Once you have decided which course you want to take (as well as a second-choice course), fill out the freshman application and bring it to the Creative Writing Program office. If you have a disability that makes it difficult to get to the office, you may submit the application via e-mail to pvitari@emory.edu. 8. Creative Writing workshops are small -- 15 students total -- and in the fall we reserve five spaces for freshmen in each 200-level class. However, these spaces fill up extremely fast, so the earlier you submit the application, the better your chance of getting in. We do maintain a waiting list and if a space becomes available and you're next on the list, we will contact you to let you know about the space. 9. Once you are accepted for a class, you will have to obtain a permission number from Paula Vitaris to enroll in the class. If the class is available, you probably can get the permission number from Ms. Vitaris when you submit your application. 10. We also take late applications, i.e., after you have registered. If a space is still available in the class you want and you are accepted for the class, you can always add in once the initial freshman registration period has closed. Add-drop ends on September 4.
